General Information:

National Route 1 is a major route in WA.

The route varies in form from multi-laned arterial road, suburban road, to single carriageway rural highway. It passes through commercial, industrial, residential and agricultural land, and also through state forest and conservation areas. The route forms the main road between Geraldton and Perth and has a vast mix of traffic including road trains.

Multiplexes along the route include:

National Highway 95 (Great Northern Highway) for 27 km, from Midland to Bullsbrook
TD203 for 9 km, from Midland to Belhus

Great Northern Highway:

NR1 duplexes NH95 (Gt Nthn Hwy) from Midland to the Brand Highway intersection at Muchea, north of Perth. The Great Northern Highway is the main land transport route between Perth and the Kimberley Region, and the only sealed road connecting Western Australia and the Northern Territory. 1

History:

Great Northern Highway:

February 1998: Work starts on reconstruction and widening of a 2.7 km section of Great Northern Highway from the RAAF Base entrance at Bullsbrook to Rutland Road. 2
July 2008: Completion of a major reconstruction of a 1.7 km section of Great Northern Highway between Apple Street and Shell roadhouse north of West Swan Road in Upper Swan. The 5 month project, included widening of the Highway from 7 metres to 11 metres with the addition of 2 metre sealed shoulders. The works also included a 3 metre wide asphalt surfaced truck bay opposite Ginger's (Gull) Roadhouse, capable of accommodating up to three B-Double road trains. 1
October 2008: Reconstruction of a 1.9 km section of the Great Northern Highway from West Swan Road South to Haddrill Road at Upper Swan. 1
