General Information:
Metroad 6 is a collection of local roads that form one large route, which is one of Sydney's major arterial roads.
The route is mostly suburban arterial standard. At the southern end around Lucas Heights through to Heathcote, it's mostly 2 to 3 lane single carrigeway. The rest of the route is mostly 4 to 6 lanes divided, however some of the route is 4 lane undivided around the northern end and in the Bankstown area.
History:
- 1940 to 1943: Construction of Heathcote Road (then IlIawarra Road) primarily for military use. Some minor local roads built before the Heathcote Road works, were upgraded as part of the project. *
- 10 November 1962: The
Silverwater Bridge, which is a five span pre-stressed bridge that crosses the Parramatta River, opened.
It was the first concrete box girder bridge built in NSW. *
- 7 September 1973 : Alfords Point Bridge opened, replacing a vehicular punt that operated between Lugarno and Illawong. At the time the existing bridge was built, the piles and abutments for a second bridge were also constructed. *
- 1989: To address peak traffic flows, a tidal traffic flow arrangement was
implemented on Alfords Point Road. *
- 1991: Alfords Point
Road was extended as a four lane road from Brushwood Drive to Old Illawarra Road,
Menai to provide for growth in Menai. *
- 1997: Davies Road was upgraded from two to
four lanes from Alma Road to Banks Street, Padstow. *
- June 1999: Opening to traffic of a four-lane link road between Rookwood Road
and Hume Highway at Stacey Street intersection. *
- 2005: Construction of the Bangor Bypass and of the North/South link between
the intersection of Alfords Point Road and Old Illawarra Road, Menai. *
- 16 December 2005: Metroad 6 extended from Marsden Road at Carlingford and replacing Metroad 7 along Pennant Hills Road to the Hills Motorway interchange. Signage updated on 21 December, 2005. **
- February 2007: Work commenced to duplicate Alfords Point Bridge over the Georges River between Alfords Point and Padstow Heights. *
