National Highway 25 (Barton Highway)

The Barton Highway, National Highway 25, is a short highway connecting Canberra to the Hume Highway at Yass, and it is part of the route from Melbourne to Canberra. It is named after Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia.

The highway continues from the NSW-ACT border at Hall and terminates at the intersection with the Federal Highway (NH23) and Northbourne Avenue (NR23) at Downer & Lyneham.

In the ACT, the entire route is dual carriageway, with the exception of a small section near Hall and the NSW-ACT border.

The route of the Barton Highway has varied somewhat over the years, with the village of Hall by-passed in the mid to late 1980s and the section of the highway near Kaleen and Lyneham being of a newer alignment than other sections of the highway. The highway used what is now Ellenborough and Mouat Streets in Lyneham. In an effort to move highway traffic away from a populated area back in the 1960 or 70s, the road was realigned to take traffic along what was called Dunsmore Street, past the Yowani Golf Course and a local horse riding club.

Most roads connecting to the Barton Highway are at-grade intersections (using standard junctions, signals or roundabouts), with the exception of Gunghalin Drive, which features a full grade separated interchange, as part of the greater Gungahlin Drive Extension.

Tourist Sign
Massively overfilled advance directional sign located outside the Gold Creek tourist village at Nicholls. This is a good example of bad signage, in order to read this sign, you take your eyes off the road ahead for too long a time, especially when this is an 80 km/h zone. July 2006, eastbound.
