Metroad 1 (Pacific Highway)
The Metroad 1 section of the Pacific Highway starts at the intersection with Pennant Hills Road (Metroad 7) and the Pacific Highway (State Route 83) at Wahroonga on Sydney's North Shore. It then traverses Sydney's northern suburbs including Turramurra, Lindfield, Roseville, Chatswood and others before connecting with the Warringah Freeway at Artarmon.
The Pacific Highway has a very long and varied history and this section is no exception. Formerly National Route 1, this section is all arterial road standard, owing much of its design to upgrades through the from the early to mid 20th century, then adjustments in 1960s, 70s and 80s. The route is highly trafficked at most times of the day because of its the main through route on Sydney's North Shore and also because of the link it provides from the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway (NH1) to the CBD and southern suburbs. It's crossed at Gordon by Metroad 3, another significant route in the area linking this section of Sydney with the Western and southern suburbs. 1993 saw the route number change from NR1 to Metroad 1, as part of the RTA's introduction of the Metroad system to Sydney to help define major tranpsort corridors throughout the city.
