The route takes in several roads such as Marsden Rd, Stewart St, Kissing Pt Rd, Silverwater Rd, St Hilliers Rd, Rawson St, Olympic Drive, Joseph St, Rookwood Rd, Stacey St, Fairford Rd, Davies Rd, Alfords Point Rd, New Illawarra Rd, Heathcote Rd and passes through suburbs such as Carlingford, Ermington, Auburn, Bankstown, Barden Ridge & Heathcote.

Following the opening of the Westlink M7 motorway on 16/12/2005, Metroad 6 was extended north along Pennant Hills Rd from Marsden Road Carlingford to the M2 Motorway. The signage change at the M2 motorway was made on the night of Wednesday 21st December, however, photos taken after this date in late December 2005, show that not all signage has been updated.
