National Highway 25 (Barton Highway)

With the RTA's internal classification of State Highway 15, the Barton Highway is a north-south route that connects Canberra to the Hume Highway. It is named after Sir Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia.

The route passes through towns such as Wallaroo, Murrumbateman and Yass. It consists on the NSW side a mix of freeway standard roadway in the Yass area to single carriageway rural highway between the ACT and several kilometres southwest of Yass.

History:

The route was formerly known as Yass-Canberra Road, and named the Barton Highway in 1954, and also proclaimed as a State Highway on the 8th of March 1935.

In its early days, the Federal Government at the time agreed to contribute two thirds of the cost of reconstruction, as the route was poorly aligned, with a narrow and worn gravel surface. The rconstruction was completed in March 1937.

The National Route 25 shield was bestowed upon the Barton Highway in 1956, then in 1974 became National Highway 25.
