National Highway 39 (Newell Highway) (Queensland Border to Narrabri)

This section of the Newell Highway, running from the Queensland Border to the town of Narrabri is single carriageway roadway, generally with one lane in each direction, some sections in built-up areas may feature traffic islands, but the extent of diviving opposing traffic directions is minimal. The road does have plenty of straights, useful for overtaking, but for the most part there are no passing lanes.

Traffic types along the route vary from cars to busses and trucks, right through to b-doubles and road trains.

Towns along the QLD border to Narrabri section include: Boggabilla, Moree, Gurley, Bellata, Edgeroi and Narrabri.

The Newell Highway between Queensland and Narrabri shares road surfaces with the Kamilaroi Highway (NR37) at Narrabri and also the Gwydir Highway (NR38) at Moree.

Total Length (Victoria to Queensland):  3172 km

Traffic Hazard
Not all of National Highway 39 is up to National Highway standards, this is because the roads are still within the useful life category and therefore sections are still the upgraded with wider lanes and shoulders. This meant in this scenario all southbound traffic had to move out of the way of the wide load on the truck coming in the opposite diredtion. July 2005, north of Narrabri. July 2005.
