National Highway 39 (Newell Highway) (Forbes to the Victorian Border)

The Newell Highway is a major highway in New South Wales. It runs parallel to the eastern coast a few hundred kilometres inland, and is the main inland direct road link from Victoria to Queensland, bypassing the more congested coastal areas of New South Wales. It runs through Boggabilla, Moree, Narrabri, Coonabarabran, Gilgandra, Dubbo, Parkes, Forbes, West Wyalong and Narrandera. Unlike most highways in New South Wales, which are named after early explorers, the Newell Highway is named after the head of the Government Main Roads Department in the 1930s.

This page looks at the highway between the town of Forbes and the NSW-Vic border.

A small section of the route (over 10 km) is duplexed with the Mid Western Highway (NR24) near and through the town West Wyalong, another small section is duplexed with Burley Griffin Way in the Beckom & Ardlethan, another duplex is NH20: the Sturt Highway, which duplexes the Newell for 1 km near Narranderra, plus there is a 150 metre duplex with NR58 - the Riverina Highway at Finley.

Towns and localities along the route include Bundaburrah, Back Creek, Wyalong, West Wyalong, Alleena, Beckom, Ardlethan, Grong Grong, Narraderra, Gillenbah, Corobimilla, Morundah, Bundure, Jerilderie, Finley and Tocumwal (on the NSW-Vic border).
