New South Wales Road Photo Gallery:
National Route 1 (Pacific Highway) (Karuah to Bulahdelah Construction)
The Pacific Highway, one of Australia’s busiest and most important road links, passes through the heart of residential, farming and retail areas of many towns along the New South Wales coast between Hexham, northwest of the industrial city of Newcastle, to the NSW-QLD Border at Tweed Heads, about 90 minutes south of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland.
The route's southern terminus is located at the junction of the Pacific Highway (SR111) and the New England Highway (NH1) at Hexham, 16 km northwest of Newcastle, which is north of Sydney. The northern terminus is at the New South Wales / Queensland border, just west of the town centre of Tweed Heads. The route itself is a mix of freeway, arterial and rural highway standards. The highway has been progressively upgraded over the years, however since the late 1980s, an accelerated upgrade program has been undertaken. Despite the acceleration program, only approximately 40% of the highway is of dual carriageway.
This section concentrates solely on the construction
works of the Karuah to Bulahdelah upgrade. Section 1 was completed and opened to traffic during the early part of 2007. The photos in this section show the section 2 and 3 upgrade.
The section 2 and 3 upgrade covers 23 km of the Pacific Highway from Karuah to Bulahdelah. The project starts approximately 2 km north of Myall Way and ends approximately 1 km south of Booral Road, which is approximately 3 km south of Bulahdelah.
The upgrade covers the following:
- 23 km of separated dual carriageway generally following the existing highway
- Seven (7) new twin bridges at:
- Nerong Waterholes (bridge and fauna crossing).
- Split Yard Creek.
- Jacks Creek (bridge and fauna crossing).
- Grey Gum Gully (bridge and fauna crossing).
- Myall Lakes National Park Number 1 (fauna crossing).
- Myall Lakes National Park Number 2 (bridge and fauna crossing).
- Houstons Flat (bridge and fauna crossing).
- Bridges combined deck length - 115 m.
- Rest areas construction
northbound traffic at Nerong Waterholes and
southbound traffic at Browns Flat.
- Connection to existing local roads including:
- Viney Creek Road west.
- Viney Creek Road east.
- Nerong Forest Road.
- Nugra Road.
- Whimbrel Drive.
- Myall River Road.
- Protection and management of fauna movement across the highway including eight fauna crossings (all underpasses at bridges and culverts) and approximately 8.7 km of fauna exclusion fencing.
- Truck lay-bys, emergency telephone bays and cross-carriageway accesses.
- Bus turning circles at Whimbrel Drive Nerong and Myall River Road with option for Viney Creek Road being investigated.
- Urban design and landscaping along the length of the project.
- 2.5 m wide shoulder for pedestrian and cyclist access along the length of the new highway.
