New South Wales Road Photo Gallery:
National Route 24 (Mid Western Highway)
Located in Country NSW, the Mid-Western Highway is the most direct route between Sydney and Adelaide and consists of mainly two-lane bitumen rural highway standard.
Passing through historic farming country, towns along the route include Blayney, Carcoar, Mandurama, Cowra, Grenfell, West Wyalong, Rankin Springs, Goolgowi and Hay.
The route's eastern terminus is at the corner of Great Western Highway, Mitchell Highway and Brilliant Street in Bathurst. NR24's western terminus is the junction with the Cobb Highway (NR75) at Hay. The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority's internal maintenance classfication for the Mid Western Highway is State Highway 6.
Significant Events:
- 1928: The Mid Western Highway was proclaimed
- December 1929: Route was re-routed between Goolgowi and Balranald
- October 1933: Highway truncated at Hay
- 1940-41: Initial Carcoar Deviation
- December 1966: Full bituminous sealing completed
- 1975: Second Carcoar Deviation
- January 1993: Newell Hwy duplex reclassified as State Highway 17
- February 1995: Newell Hwy intersection at Marsden reconstructed to favour north-south Newell Hwy traffic
- June 2003: Kings Plains Deviation
- Feb 2006: Construction of a new bridge over Coombing Creek, Carcoar.
