National Route 32: Barrier Highway

The Barrier Highway in New South Wales, is an east-west route, which starts in the town of Nyngan and crosses the border into South Australia at the town of Cockburn. In NSW the highway is signposted as National Route 32, and A32 in South Australia.

Towns along the route include Nyngan, Cobar, Wilcannia and the mining town of Broken Hill.

The Barrier Highway forms part of the B-Triple route, allowing trucks up to 36.5m long along it's route.

The official opening of the Barrier Highway of the South Australian section was performed by the then SA Minister of Roads and Transport, Mr Murray Hill, MLC, and took place on 7 November 1968. The ceremony marked the completion of bituminous sealing for 320 miles (515 km) between Adelaide and Broken Hill, and the last stretch of road completed between Terowie and Cockburn. The roadwork had commenced in 1961 and included 19 bridges. Commissioners of all six State Road Authorities including the South Australian Highways Commissioner, John Yeates, attended the opening ceremony. At Yunta a two tonne stone with a bronze plaque commemorates the opening of the Barrier Highway.
