National Route 32: Mitchell Highway (Orange to Wellington)

The Mitchell Highway's eastern terminus is with Brilliant Street, Great Western Highway ((Stewart Street) NR32) and the Mid Western Highway (NR24) at Bathurst, the Mitchell Highway's western terminus is located at Nyngan, with the Barrier Highway (NR32) and the Mitchell Highway (NR71), outside Nyngan Park.

The Mitchell Highway passes through several Local Government Areas (LGAs) including Bathurst, Cabonne, Orange, Wellington and Dubbo. The highway is a major rural highway in central and northern New South Wales and also in South Central Queensland. The highway links Bathurst, Orange, Molong, Wellington, Dubbo, Narromine, Nevertire, Nyngan, Bourke, Cunnamulla, Charleville, and Augathella.

The Mitchell Highway is named after Major Thomas Mitchell, who was Surveyor-General of New South Wales in the 1820s and explored much of inland New South Wales and Victoria.

The highway is part of the B-triple truck transport network, which covers the entire length of the Mitchell Highway (both NR32 and NR71) from Orange to the Queensland border.

Orange to Wellington History:

• 1939: 120 miles or 44% of the Mitchell Highway northwest from Bathurst had been sealed with Bitumen.
• 1950s: extention of bitumous surface.
• November 1972: sealing of Mitchell Highway completed.
• 2004: Realignment at Copper Hill, located between Molong and Larras Lee. Blathery Creek bridge reconstruction.
