State Route 70 (Decommissioned) (Sydney to La Perouse)
State Route 70 was a route covering the south eastern suburbs of inner Sydney using Anzac Parade and Bunnerong Road. The route was decomissioned south of Botany Road in the mid 90s and then the rest in 2004.
The route consists of divided multi lane road and also single carriageway 2 lane roadway and passes through commercial, residential and industrial areas before termining at La Perouse. The La Perouse peninsula is the northern headland of Botany Bay. It is notable for its old military outpost at Bare Island and the Botany Bay National Park. La Perouse is surrounded by the suburbs of Phillip Bay and Little Bay. Nearby suburbs include Port Botany, Matraville, Chifley and Malabar. La Perouse is one of few Sydney suburbs with a French title; another being Sans Souci. Kurnell is located opposite, on the southern headland of Botany Bay. La Perouse is named after Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88), who landed on the northern shore of Botany Bay on 26 January 1788.
State Route 70 started at its northern terminus at Anzac Parade, which begins at Driver's Triangle, a small park at the intersection of Moore Park Road and South Dowling Street at Moore Park. It is a a southwards extension of Flinders Street, on the border of Surry Hills and Paddington. The street received its name in memory of members of the First Australian Imperial Force (later to become known as "the ANZACs") who marched down the street from their barracks (now a heritage listed part of UNSW) to the harbour where they were transported to World War I.
The route passes south through the suburbs of Moore Park, Kensington, Kingsford, Maroubra, Matraville, Malabar, Chifley and Little Bay before ending at a loop at La Perouse.
For the most part, it is one of the busiest road based public transport routes in Sydney. South of Kingsford, Anzac Parade is a divided road with a wide grassy median stip (and sometimes parking areas). This median strip was formerly used by a tram service. The line was closed in 1961, when the route was replaced by buses.
