State Route 79 (Nowra to Mittagong)
State route 79 is a significant link between the Shoalhaven and surrounding coastal areas of New South Wales, to the Southern Highlands. It crosses the Illawarra Escarpment near Nowra before winding its way up into the mountains passing through several towns along its way including Cambewarra, Kangaroo Valley, Moss Vale, Mittagong and Aylmerton.
The routes northern terminus is located at the interchange with the Hume Hwy (NH31) & Old Hume Hwy (Former NH31), at Aylmerton just north of Mittagong and the routes southern terminus is at the roundabout located on the corner of the Princes Hwy (NR1) & Cambewarra Mtn Rd at Bomaderry, just north of Nowra.
Roads along State Route 79 include Old Hume Hwy (Main Street), Bowral Rd, Mittagong Rd, Station St, Funston St, Bowral-Moss Vale Rd, Argyle St, Illawarra Hwy, Nowra Rd, Kangaroo Valley Rd, Cambewarra Mtn Rd and the route consists of multi lane former National Highway to 2-lane suburban and rural highway and roads.
A significant feature along the route is the suspension bridge over the Kangaroo River at Kangaroo Valley. The historical Hampden Bridge, the oldest suspension bridge in Australia, being constructed in 1898.
