State Route 88 (Wollongong to Picton): Former Alignment
State Route 88 is a major coal hauling route that runs
east-west between the coast at Wollongong and coal mines
in the Picton area.
Back in 1993, Wilton's town centre was by-passed due to a significant number of bad truck accidents, east of the town, on what is now the former alignment of SR88. The new alignment shaves several kilometres and minutes off a trip when travelling from the Hume Highway (NH31) to Mount Ousley Road (NR1).
The old route is named Wilton Road and Macarthur Road these days and hasn't changed much since it was by-passed. It's a single carriageway affair, with a few very old signs (some of which have been obselete for several years) and also old wood and mesh roadside crash fencing.
