Gateway Motorway (M1)
The Gateway Motorway runs from Drewvale (Metroad 4)
(where it connects with the Logan Motorway (Metroad
4 & 6)) to Bald Hills in Brisbane's north where
it connects with the Gympie Arterial Road (Metroad 3)
and the Bruce Highway (M1).
In this section we only look at the M1 part of the
road, which began life in the 1980s as the Gateway Arterial
Road, it was eventualy upgraded to full motorway standard
with overpasses and interchanges completed at major
junctions and roundabouts that were placed in the early
stages of the roadway.
The motorway includes the Gateway Bridge, which has
six lanes (three in each direction). The bridge was
financed by funds borrowed by the Queensland State Government,
as a result, bridge users pay a toll on the southern
side of the Brisbane River. The Bridge is operated and
maintained by Queensland Motorways, which is a Government-owned
enterprise.
The bridge and motorway approaches were completed in
December 1985 and officially opened in January 1986.
Around 200,000 people attended the opening festivities
and walked the new bridge. The Gateway Arterial was
constructed in two stages and was completed in 1986.
Due to increasing demand, the Gateway Arterial was duplicated
and upgraded to a motorway in the 1990s, and became
a national highway in 1994 with the Federal Government
responsible for funding capital improvements and maintenance
works.

Gateway
Bridge
Construction of the Gateway Bridge commenced
on 5 June 1980, and was officially commissioned on 11
January 1986. The Gateway Bridge stretches 1.63kms across
the Brisbane River , with the main span being 260m long,
which at the time of construction was the longest concrete
box girder span in the world, plus at its highest point,
the Gateway Bridge is 64.5m above the Brisbane River
- the equivalent of a 20 storey building. (Information
courtesy of the Queensland Motorways web site) This
view is from near Brisbane Airport at the DFO, October

Plenty of freeway green signage is located on
the Mount Gravatt - Capalaba Road interchange at Mackenzie,
this is the southbound view of the interchange. If you
head east here the route is SR21 (which was the number
of the entire road before a section of it was changed
to Metroad 2). If you turn right at the interchange
and go under the freeway, you are on Metroad 2, which
eventually connects with the Warrego Highway (NH-A2)
and the Cunningham Highway (NH15) at Dinmore near Ipswich.
