Queensland Road Photo Gallery:
National Highway A39

National Highway A39 is an amalgamation of the former NH39 & NH85 routes, which was done by Main Roads Queensland in 2006.

The route continues NH39, the Newell Highway, from the border with NSW at Goondiwindi, and after over the Macintyre River, is known on the QLD side as the Cunningham Highway, before turning off into Goondiwindi as the Barwon Highway, then the highway becomes the Leichardt Highway for about 20 km, before splitting as NR39, NH-A39 then continues to the junction with the NH-A2, Warrego Highway at Toowoomba as NH-A39.

The route is more or less a north-south route through central and southern Queensland, providing a link to cities and towns such as Rockhampton, Gladstone and Mackay to New South Wales and the southern states.

Any NH85 signs shown on this page, should now be coverplated with NH-A39 sheilds. However judging by previous signposting attempts at Goondiwindi, anything is possible.

Gore Highway:

From the home of the famous race horse Gunsynd and Queensland’s Cotton Capital to Queensland’s Garden City, the Gore highway takes travellers through the world famous Darling Downs from Goondiwindi to Toowoomba. Passing through the Darling Downs, the rich black soils yeild grain and cotton crops.

Cunningham Highway:

In 1827, from hills near the present-day town of Warwick, explorer Allan Cunningham first sighted a gap in the Great Dividing Range, which led to the region being opened to development.

The Cunningham Highway, links Ipswich & Brisbane with the southern Darling Downs and provides a section of the inland Brisbane-Sydney and also Brisbane-Melbourne road corridor. The highway's route numbers include NH-A3 and also NH15.

Leichhardt Highway:

The highway provides a north-south route through central and southern QLD, linking Rockhampton, Gladstone & Mackay with NSW and the southern states, and is named after scientist come explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who famously completed the first exploration from Brisbane to Darwin with some of the highway's corridor following his successful route.

Destination Signage
These signs are used in urban areas that are difficult to negotiate for through traffic. Goondiwindi has so many parts marked as NH39 or ALT-NH39, so extra navigation aids such as this are required, northbound near the NSW-QLD border, April 2005.
