State Route 20 (Brisbane)
State Route 20 actually exists in 3 separate locations.
They were originally part of a larger ring route (such
as SR10, 30 and 40), but got severed when the Metroads
came into existence.
The "south western" SR20 acts as a cross
city thoroughfare, which starts on the corner of Moggill
Road (SR33) and Coonan Street in the inner west suburb
of Indooroopilly, it then crosses the Brisbane River
via the stately Walter Taylor Bridge, which was opened
in 1936 using some of the construction cables used to
build the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The route then passes
through the suburbs of Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood,
over Oxley Creek at Rocklea, and Moorooka before it
terminates at Salisbury on the corner of Evans Road,
Toohey Road and Orange Grove Road (SR11).
The "eastern" SR20 was dropped from Newnham
Road and extended along the short piece of Creek Road
that links Cavendish and Logan Roads. Newnham Road now
remains SR41 only.
The "northern" SR20 used to run east along
Junction Rd from Sandgate Rd, through Hendra to connect
with Nudgee Rd and Kingsford Smith Dr before heading
to the old ferry (Holt St) across the Brisbane River.
When the Gateway Bridge replaced the ferry, SR20 moved
onto the Gateway Arterial Rd/Bridge to connect with
the "eastern" SR20. Sometime later it was
re-routed to follow Sandgate Rd briefly before following
the East-West Arterial Rd to connect with the Gateway
Mwy/Airport Dr interchange.
