State Route 89 is located in the border
region of Queensland. The routes eastern terminus is
on the corner of High and Connor Streets at Stanthorpe
(off the New England Highway, south west of Brisbane
in the heart of The Granite Belt) before the route passes
through the towns and localities of Pikedale, Silver
Spur, Texas, and Limevale before terminating at its
northwestern point at Inglewood on the corner of the
Albert Street (Cunningham Highway (NR42)) and Princess
Street (Inglewood-Texas Road). Inglewood was established
in 1862 and is in the south west of the State, 91 kilometres
east of Goondiwindi and 109 kilometres west of Warwick.
The distance From Brisbane is 270 kilometres.
The route passes through bushland,
national parks and farming areas as well as a handful
of small population towns. Texas which is roughly two
thirds along the route from Stanthorpe, was named over
a land claim in the 1850's which bore many similarities
to one happening in Republic of Texas and Mexico in
the United States at the same time. The original town
was established on the river flats in 1875 but was relocated
after the disastrous floods of 1890 and 1921. Texas
is located just off the Bruxner Highway between Goondiwindi
and Tenterfield and links north south into the Fossickers
Way via Inverell or Warialda as an alternative route
to Sydney.
