(Great Alpine Road)
The Great Alpine Road meanders its
way through snow capped mountains, national parks and
farmlands on its journey to the coast. The route passes
through wineries & historical villages.
The official opening of the Great
Alpine Road was on the 4th of April, 1998, although
work started 147 years earlier with The Angus McMillan
track on the western side of Omeo being cut in 1864,
but it was as early as 1841 that the track was cut from
Omeo to open up Gippsland. Great Alpine Road travels
from Wangaratta to Bairnsdale.
