C283 takes in several towns including Lockwood South, Porcupine Flat, Maldon, Newstead, Welshman's Reef, Sandon, Eberys, Campbelltown, Lawrence, Smeaton, Kingston, Allendale and Creswick and is located in country Victoria.

The route is more or less a north-south route, with the southern terminus located at the intersection of Clunes-Creswick Road (C291) at Creswick and the northern terminus at the intersection with the Calder Alternative Highway (A790). The route crosses the Pyrenees Highway (B180) at about its halfway point at Newstead.
