MR43 (Tullamarine Fwy / Citylink West)
MR43 was introduced in the 60s and has undergone many route changes over the years. In its current form it covers the Tullamarine Freeway and the western section of the Citylink Motorway. The route's terminii are: northern: Airport Dr / Melbourne Dr at Melbourne Airport and
southern: West Gate Fwy at Port Melbourne.
The entire route is motorway standard and an important artery in Melbourne's road network, connecting the West Gate Freeway at Port Melbourne to Melbourne Airport, and also linking to Calder Freeway and Western Ring Road. Eight kilometres of the freeway is part of CityLink toll road network.
Tullamarine Freeway is one of the oldest freeways in Melbourne. It was originally constructed in 1968-1970 to alleviate traffic on Mount Alexander Road and also Keilor Road as part of Calder Highway upgrade, and to link the city with Tullamarine) Airport. The section around Essendon Airport started off as just an arterial road named Lancefield Road, and was eventually converted to freeway standard.
One of the world’s first fully electronic toll roads, construction began in May 1996 on the CityLink section, which opened to traffic in late 2000. The motorway incorporates two long tunnels, one major bridge and an elevated roadway, 17 interchanges. This section of motorway is operated by Transurban, and uses electronic tolling only. Vehicles have an E-Tag on the windsheild, which is read by a reading device when the vehicle passes underneath one of the toll gantries. The route features the famous Sound Tube, used in countless TV commercials.
