Vintage Signals: ACT

This gallery concentrates on traffic signals used in the 1970s and earler. Many brands were used by different road maintenance authorities including AWA, Eagle, G&W and many more. Signals prior to the 1970s use glass lenses and reflectors and did not use target boards. Textual pedestrian signals were the norm and in some states these were neon signals not incandescent. Many styles of pedestrian call buttons were also used too, some light up models and some that did not. Setups from state to state varied widely, and in some states a Red & Yellow together phase was used before the green signal was lit.

This page covers signals used in the ACT. Over the years, the ACT has used several different brands of signal including G&W (Eagle) and AWA. Canberra's first two sets of traffic lights were brought into operation on the 23rd October 1965. They were located at Northbourne Avenue/London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue/Cooyong Street. There are now over 178 intersections controlled by traffic lights in the ACT. Additionally, there are more than 23 signalised pedestrian crossings.

ACT AWA Polycarbonate Pedestrian Lantern
It seems this style of pedestrian signal is used in the ACT only. Manufactured by AWA, probably in the 1970s, these originally had worded cutouts installed in the signal. This one has been retrofitted with pictograms.
