Vintage Signals: QLD

This gallery concentrates on traffic signals used in the 1970s and earler. Many brands were used by different road maintenance authorities including AWA, Eagle, G&W and many more. Signals prior to the 1970s use glass lenses and reflectors and did not use target boards. Textual pedestrian signals were the norm and in some states these were neon signals not incandescent. Many styles of pedestrian call buttons were also used too, some light up models and some that did not. Setups from state to state varied widely, and in some states a Red & Yellow together phase was used before the green signal was lit.

The first signals installed in Brisbane were on Queen Street, and went into operation on the 24th May 1936.

Old AWA Signal
This signal is an original 1960s model by AWA. Located in suburban Brisbane on the Pacific Motorway (Metroad 3), Marshall Road (State Route 11) and Bapaume Road (State Route 10) intersections at Tarragindi. Note the old cast iron pedestrian call button.

Old Queensland signal arm
Very rare old style overhang signal arm still in use, March 2006, probably 40 years after it was installed. The signal is much newer, a Halogen ATS, which would be less than 10 years old. This signal setup is on the corner of Kent and Adelaide Streets, outside Maryborough City Hall.

Common Gold Coast Overhang
Common to Queensland's Gold Coast, this intersection has an older more arced overhang post. This intersection is the corner of the Gold Coast Highway (SR2) & Cypress Avenue, Surfers Paradise.
