Traffic Signal Photo Gallery:
Vintage Signals: VIC

This gallery concentrates on traffic signals used in the 1970s and earler. Many brands were used by different road maintenance authorities including AWA, Eagle, G&W and many more. Signals prior to the 1970s use glass lenses and reflectors and did not use target boards. Textual pedestrian signals were the norm and in some states these were neon signals not incandescent. Many styles of pedestrian call buttons were also used too, some light up models and some that did not. Setups from state to state varied widely, and in some states a Red & Yellow together phase was used before the green signal was lit.

The first signals in Melbourne were located on the intersection of Collins Street & Swanston Street, and went into operation in 1928.

Old Neon Pedestrian Signal
Still in use over 30 years after installation in 2003, this is a neon pedestrian signal. Believed to be quite rare it's surrounded by an old AWA lantern and a new polycarbonate ATS / Aldridge signal.

Neon Pedestrian Signal Internals
Inside layout of old neon pedestrian signals of the 50's & 60s. Some of these signals are still in use in Melbourne and employ 2 neon tubes to light up the red Don't Walk message (horizontal tubes) and the green Walk signal (vertical tubes)

Preserved Marshalite traffic signal
These old signals were once used in Victoria. The hand on the dial would indicate who had right of way, and how long they had left. With vandalised modern signal attached, this specimen is from Chelsea, Victoria.

Early Pictogram Pedestrian Signal
An Eagle signal, this one is an early style walking man signal with square lenses. The body was originally intended for text DONT WALK / WALK lenses. Signal in the Darren Hodges / Signspotters collection.

Old Yellow Victorian Signals
A typical 1960s pedestrian crossing in Victoria. This is Macarthur St looking north to Gisbourne St, East Melbourne.

Old Style Pedestrian Crossing Warning
In Victoria and the ACT many uncontrolled pedestrian crossings are highlighted with yellow alternating signals. This is a common setup from the 1960s in suburban Melbourne. Note the old crossing sign.
