Trailblazers / Route Shields

Route Numbering using trailblazers is designed to help motorists navigate their way round, using route shields as guidance. This section attempts to cover the different styles of sheilds used around Australia.

Alphanumeric Route Marker

Used in Victoria, SA, parts of Queensland, Tasmania and NSW.

In NSW many signs have coverplates hiding these numbers, but in some country areas, new signs have been installed without the coverplates.

Alternate National Route 

Rare these days, but some Alternate National Routes survive in ACT other states.

National Route

Denotes a road of national importance. Akin to the American US Route System (US66 for example).

National Route - Business Route

Denotes a road of national importance but also has a Queensland business route attached, which makes the route travel through the CBD of a town.

National Highway

Indicates that the road is part of the national highway that travels around Australia.

Alphanumeric National Highway

Indicates that the road is part of the national highway that travels around Australia.

Metroad

Metroads are similar to ring roads. This sheild is used in NSW and Queensland.

State Route

This sheild denotes the state route number. Used until recently in all states, however, still in use in NSW, QLD, WA, NT and also in metropolitain areas of Melbourne.

NSW Freeway Sheild

This is an old New South Wales freeway marker. This sheild is no longer used, but examples do survive on the F6 Southern Freeway at Wollongong.

QLD Freeway Shield

This was once used in Queensland on their freeways. One still survives on Warrigal Rd at Eight Mile Plains (Brisbane).

VIC Freeway Shield

This is an old Victorian freeway marker. This sheild is no longer used.

Over Dimensional Route Sheild

Used in a number of states and territories, this route is designed for oversized vehicles to by-pass heavily trafficked roads or suburban areas. Usually colour coded.

Sydney Ring Road

This sheild is no longer used, but was part of the Sydney ring road system from the 1960's and 70's.

ACT Tourist Route

In the ACT, tourist routes are coloured coded.

Tourist Route

Found in many parts of Australia, this sheild reminds the driver which tourist route they are driving along.
